This beautiful book, Cabanes libres du Vercors, published by Marseille-based Editions du Chemin des Crêtes, takes us on a journey through this pre-Alpine mountain range. It is designed to be leafed through on your sofa or camping chair, rather than taken out into the field. It would be a shame to crease or damage it in your rucksack! Its magnificent photos and quotations are an ode to these refuges that are accessible to all.

With descriptions of 40 of these makeshift shelters or veritable paradises, you're bound to find a destination for your next outing. GPS coordinates and a legend (nearby water source, fire-starting equipment, dogs allowed) help you plan your trip.

This book is an invitation to discover not only the Vercors region, which we at Aventure Nordique love so much, but also these huts, which are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their density and diversity are well represented in this book. Among the 40 shelters described, we can mention the famous Aiguilletes hut at the foot of Grand Veymont, the recent Font Froide hut near Pic Saint-Michel, the more discreet Emile Locatelli hut in Les Coulmes, and the unmissable Chaumailloux refuge facing Mont-Aiguille.
